My Story

Growing up, I had several passions—reading, singing, sewing, and making flower gardens, to name a few. While my singing voice may not have been anything to boast about, that didn’t stop me from auditioning for more than one part in my church choir. I even tried playing the piano, though that passion didn’t last long. Sewing and gardening, however, remained constants—two creative outlets where I could never go wrong. But of all my interests, reading has always been my greatest passion.

Books became my refuge. Whenever I felt sad, troubled, or overwhelmed, I could lose myself in a story. Reading was my comfort zone—my way of processing thoughts, finding inspiration, and sparking creativity. Often, as I read, ideas would pour in, and I would quickly jot them down before they slipped away.

In time, my love of reading led me to write. I felt a deep conviction—not only to tell my own story but to amplify the stories of others whose experiences had intersected with mine. I began to realize how much we share in common, how many of our struggles and triumphs mirror each other. This realization compelled me to capture those voices with honesty and heart.

That’s when I began writing the manuscript for my first book, The Light of Day. Almost immediately, the work took hold of me. I was eager to share it, to offer something real and encouraging to others. Though the journey to publication was long—marked by setbacks, challenges, and waiting—I never stopped believing. There was always a sliver of light in the tunnel, a quiet but persistent hope that carried me through.

And now, here it is—my story, in your hands.

This book is more than a collection of words. It’s my voice, finally free. It’s a testament to the power of perseverance and purpose. It speaks of my people—Black people and the way of life in our community—with honesty, dignity, and strength. Through these pages, I’ve claimed space for our stories, for the truth that deserves to be told.

I hope my journey resonates with you. I hope it strengthens and encourages you. And above all, I hope it inspires you to raise your voice, to speak your truth, and to never be silenced.

I’m already looking forward to my next project—and to continuing the work of sharing stories that matter.
